The Common Cold

The common cold is a mild viral infection affecting the nose and throat, often caused by rhinoviruses. You typically present with symptoms such as a runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, sneezing, coughing, mild headache, and low-grade fever. These symptoms usually develop gradually and resolve within 7–10 days. While uncomfortable, the cold is self-limiting and rarely serious.

Treatment focuses on symptom relief and your comfort. Rest, hydration, and over-the-counter medications like acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help manage fever and aches. Decongestants and saline nasal sprays may ease nasal congestion. You are encouraged to avoid antibiotics, as they are ineffective against viruses. Good hand hygiene and avoiding close contact with infected individuals can help prevent spread.
