Heartburn.
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) also known as Heratburn is a condition where stomach acid repeatedly flows back into the esophagus, causing irritation and uncomfortable symptoms. Many patients describe a burning feeling in the chest after meals, a sour taste in the mouth, or a sensation of food coming back up. Some also notice chronic cough, hoarseness, or trouble sleeping because symptoms worsen when lying down.
Treatment focuses on relieving discomfort and preventing long‑term irritation of the esophagus. I often begin with lifestyle changes such as eating smaller meals, avoiding late‑night eating, reducing trigger foods like caffeine or spicy dishes, and elevating the head of the bed. I can also prescribe and recommend medications that reduce stomach acid—such as antacids, proton pump inhibitors (PPI), and H2 Receptor Blockers can also help. For persistent or severe symptoms, further evaluation may be recommended and I will refer you to a specialist.
With the right plan and follow‑up, most people experience meaningful relief and improved quality of life.
